What Makes a Pickleball Paddle Quiet
The sound you hear is the paddle face and the ball briefly deforming and snapping back. How much energy escapes as airborne noise depends mostly on what sits behind the face.
Core material is the biggest lever
Core construction is the main variable in a low noise pickleball paddle. A polymer core pickleball paddle, built from a polypropylene honeycomb, absorbs far more impact energy than the older aluminum and aramid honeycomb designs that produce a sharper, higher pitched crack. Polymer has become the most common core material on the market, which means many players are already partway there without knowing it.
Core thickness matters too. A 16mm pickleball paddle generally plays softer and quieter than a 13mm build of the same materials, because the thicker honeycomb has more room to absorb the hit. Thin cores feel poppy and lively, and they sound that way from a hundred metres away.
