Why Paddle Accessories Matter for Performance and Protection
Your paddle is the single most important piece of equipment you own, but the accessories you add to it can shape how it feels, plays, and lasts. From extending the life of a worn grip to fine-tuning the weight distribution for more power or control, paddle accessories let you customize your setup without buying a new paddle.
The pickleball paddle accessories market has grown alongside the sport itself. According to Pickleball Canada, participation continues to surge across the country, and as more players move beyond the beginner stage, the demand for accessories that optimize paddle performance has followed. Understanding what each accessory does, and when you actually need one, will save you money and help you play better.
Overgrips: Tackiness, Absorption, and When to Replace
An overgrip is a thin wrap applied over your paddle's existing grip. It is one of the cheapest upgrades you can make, and it has an outsized effect on comfort and control.
When shopping for a pickleball overgrip, consider three main factors:
- Tackiness. A tackier grip helps you maintain a secure hold without squeezing hard, which reduces fatigue during long rallies. If you play outdoors in humid conditions, tackiness matters even more since moisture can make a smooth grip slippery.
- Absorption. Some overgrips are designed to wick sweat away from your hand, while others prioritize a dry, smooth feel. Players who sweat heavily should look for perforated or absorbent overgrip materials.
- Thickness. Adding an overgrip increases your overall grip circumference by roughly 1/16 of an inch. If your current grip size is already at the upper limit of what feels comfortable, a thinner overgrip is the better choice.
Overgrips wear out faster than replacement grips. Plan to replace yours every 10 to 15 hours of play, or sooner if it starts feeling slick. If you are unsure about your ideal grip size before adding an overgrip, our grip sizing and care guide walks through the measurement process in detail.
